eightCubed
About
The eightCubed is an 8x8x8 full-color LED cube. The system consists of an LED lattice, main controller, user interface, and power supply. This system allows for display of 3-dimensional video in the form of very low resolution animation. Most animations are arbitrary, ranging from simple shapes to complex forms. The eightCubed is also educational, giving users experience with multiplexing and electronics design.
Current version: v2.3
The current version of the eightCubed has significantly more features than the first (1.0). We added a user interface and SD card, allowing the system to be completely embedded (i.e. will play animations without a PC). We also rebuilt the firmware to be more streamlined and efficient – there’s even a custom bootloader to allow for firmware upgrades by a user.
Kits – How do I get an eightCubed??
Due to our small company stature, we do not maintain consistent stock of our products. This means we can go for weeks or months at a time without having kits stock. Please bear with us and check back often – for news about our kits, please sign up for our mailing list.

Animations
The heart of this project is animation. Animations are user-developed and user-contributed. We provide software, Cubesense, with which you may create any of the three animation types. This content can be simulated on Cubesense or played on an eightCubed system.
To download or share animations, please visit the Animations Database at our Wiki.

[...] 1 brass rod for every row and column in a vertical plane. It might be a bit overkill. I believe eightcubed only uses 3 vertical rods per plane, but 8 planes are still 8 rods in one direction. Since the [...]
